Why IEBC Sacked Procurement Director Lawy Aura

The IEBC has accused Mr Aura of delaying the procurement of ballot papers that will be used in the August 8 polls. 

Kenya’s  electoral commission has fired its procurement director Lawy Aura.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has accused Mr Aura of misconduct on his duties that are believed to have so far affected the preparations towards the August 8 General Election.

The IEBC has accused Mr Aura of delaying the procurement of ballot papers that will be used in the August 8 polls. 

The statement on his sacking was released on Tuesday morning but Chairman Wafula Chebukati says he was relieved on May 29.

Mr Aura’s sacking comes barely two days after the commission controversially decided to send its ICT Director James Muhati on a 30-day compulsory leave following accusations that he had refused to cooperate in an ongoing audit of the 19.74 million-people voter register.

Conforming the details of Mr Aura’s sacking, Mr Chebukati said the Commission has relieved the procurement director Lawy Aura of his duties due to his incompetence that has staled the operations made operations.

“We have noted with great concern the growing anxiety associated with the ballot procurement. The Commission is addressing the issue of the procurement of ballot material with utmost urgency.” he said as quoted by the Nation. 

“We will continue to engage all political actors and in utmost good faith as we proceed with the procurement of the ballot material and other processes,” he added.

The recent sackings at the IEBC have generated suspicion on social media platforms with users querring the integrity of the body towards the highly polarised August polls.

One Twitter user by the name Muhoro Kenyatta posted: “At this rate, Chebukati will end up sacking himself on August 1 citing inability to conduct the elections. Pole Lawy Aura.”

Joh Sisol then posted: “So, IEBC Has FIRED Procurement Director Mr. Lawy AURA. Which Games Are They Playing? TUKO TAYARI!”

Mr Aura could not be reached for comments by the by the time this writer was going to press.
