A popular petrol station in Bungoma town in on the spot for polluting the environment.
Shreeji Petrol station, which is located along Bungoma-Kanduyi highway, has been accused of discharging waste material to a near-by river, therefore pausing a serious health danger to the residents.
In a letter by a local resident to the National Environment Complaints Committee, the filling station has been accused of discharging waste to River Sio, which serves thousands of residents and livestock both in Bungoma and Busia Counties.
“It is my contention as well as that of the residents of Bungoma County who totally depend on River Sio as a source of water for their domestic use, that unless the ongoing pollution by the SHREEJI Petrol Station is checked, my life and that of other residents of Bungoma and Busia Counties will be irreparably affected,” wrote Mr. Cornelius Lupao in a letter seen by Wakajuanes.Com.
Mr. Lupao also accused the station for interfering with the constitutional rights of the residents to enjoy a clean, health environment.
“Note that the continued activities of water pollution by SHEEJI Petrol Station is a violation against the provision of the Environmental Management and Coordination Act and it’s related regulations which requires every person to refrain from directly or indirectly cause water pollution,” read the statement copied to the Director-General for NEMA and the Bungoma County Director for NEMA
There are claims that the County Director – Planning, issued a permit for it’s construction and the station is allegedly discharging its contents to the river and even accused of grabbing part of the river to build a perimeter wall.
