Renown lawyer and publisher Ahmednasir Abdullahi on Wednesday landed another job, after being elected as the Senior Counsel Committee of the Law Society of Kenya for a period of two years.
The Senior Counsel committee is responsible for selecting lawyers for conferment of the rank before the names are forwarded to the Chief Justice, who then transmits the same to the president for gazetting.
Ahmednasir Abdullahi SC was elected Chair of the Committee and of the Committee on Senior Counsel, alongside other members of Senior Counsel Committee who include Nzamba Kitonga SC, Prof Patricia Kameri-Mbote SC, Prof Tom Ojienda SC and Joyce Majiwa SC.
According to the Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, Ahmednasir SC, Kitonga SC and Majiwa SC constitute part of Committee on Senior Counsel under Section 17 (3) of the Advocates Act.
The conferment of the Senior Counsel status in Kenya is the highest a lawyer can achieve locally, and it comes with several privileges.
For instance, cases that will be presented to the court by lawyers conferred with the title will be given priority despite whatsoever, where they have been listed even if it is last.
Getting the title is however not a walk in the park, as for one to qualify for the title, He or she must have argued at least 10 High Court and five Supreme Court or Court of Appeal cases.
Adding on to the good news, the Nairobi Law Monthly publisher is also set to be interviewed on Citizen Tv’s popular show JKL, hosted by renowned journalist Jeff Koinange where they will be discussing the recent rifts in Jubilee Party, which Ahmednasir has represented in the Supreme Court before.
