Kibabii University has appointed Prof. Siamba Donald Namasaka as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the institution, a position he was holding in an acting capacity before.

In an internal memo addressed to the university staff and seen by Wakajuaness.Com, Professor Siamba will serve for a period of five years starting from June 1, 2020.

“This is to inform you that Prof. Donald N. Siamba has been appointed at the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance, Administration and Development) for a contract period of five years with effect from June 1, 2020,” read the memo from Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Ipara Odeo.

His appointment comes after intense lobbying over the position that was left vacant following the resignation of Prof. Shem Aywa. Prof. Siamba had been acting as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor from May 4th, 2019.

Upon expiry of an initial 6 months, his acting period was extended to May 2020. He beat off competition from the other two top candidates shortlisted for the position who included Prof. Emmy Jerono Kipsoi and Prof. Lydia Kutima.

A large section of the local community, political leaders, and students had thrown their weight behind Prof.Siamba, terming him as ‘one of their own’.

They included Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi and Bungoma County Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Nyongesa, who earlier before inMay, had mobilized the residents to reject any other appointee who is not from the region.

The two leaders regretted that despite the University being located in Bungoma County and having received the support of the local community, there is no professor from the region who holds a senior administrative position.

But the new appointment has brought excitement to the locals with Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka leading other leaders in congratulating the new DVC, terming him as a ‘great person”.
