Kenyan Ambassador to DR Congo Dr. George Masafu has been given high voltage security following a recent terror attack that left a European envoy dead.
Dr. Masafu had paid a four days visit to Lubumbashi city in Haut-Katanga province where he was received by the Governor H.E Jacques Kyambula Katwe. They discussed issues of economic diplomacy between Kenya and DRC. Amb Masafu also met with Kenyan Businessmen and diaspora living and working in Lubumbashi.
In view of the recent terrorist event against the diplomat, maximum security has been availed around the clock during the visit.
The unfortunate attack led to the killing of the Italian Diplomat Luca Attanasio who died of his wounds on Monday after a World Food Programme (WFP) convoy came under fire near the eastern city of Goma while he was on a field trip, Al Jazeera reported.
The Italian government said an Italian policeman, Vittorio Iacovacci, and a driver it did not identify also died. Diplomats traveling outside the capital city are now being given heavy security. Dr Masafu was among those assigned heavily armed security along the clock during his visit in Lubumbash.
DRC’s interior ministry blamed the killings on “members of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda [FDLR]”, a Rwandan Hutu rebel group that has plagued the region for more than a quarter of a century.
But the FDLR rejected the allegation in a statement received by AFP news agency on Tuesday.
It said the ambassador’s convoy was attacked near the Rwandan border, “not far from a position of the FARDC [DRC’s armed forces] and Rwandan soldiers”.
Dr. Masafu, who is a media mogul with fortunes in Western Kenya, has been endorsed by various clan, business and professional leaders to vie for the Bungoma Senatorial seat currently held by Senator Moses Wetang’ula. Many residents have labeled Ambassodor George Masafu as the better option for the Senatorial seat in 2022.
Our efforts to reach out to Dr. Amb Masafu for comments were unsuccessful but his close aids say he is safe and discharging his normal duties as assigned by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
