There is a famous quote that ‘ You are what you eat ’ and truly indeed, your food choices each day will affect your health. So you may want to know how your eating habit is affecting your health, and I will explain how.

What is good nutrition then? Good nutrition involves healthy eating habits that are a part of ensuring a healthy lifestyle.

A healthy lifestyle in most cases is accomplished with diet and physical exercise. Good nutrition combined with the physical activity of a person helps a person to maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, and promote overall health.

According to the nutrition status of Kenya, a high proportion of adults are either overweight or obese. This is associated with a higher prevalence of many cancers, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

The cost of undernutrition on health, education, and productivity in Kenya is alarming over the years. Statistics indicate that nearly 1.8 million (26%) of the children population are stunted ( low height for age) and over 290,000 children are wasted accumulating to 4% of the population.

It has also been proven that under-nutrition increases the risk of illnesses and death among children. So then, good nutrition is very important from the start of life during conception for children all through to their adult life.

Nutrition is the science that interprets the nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health, and disease of an organism.

Eating a balanced diet is a very important part of the good health of everyone. It means that your body is able to get all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it requires in order to function well.

It is very vital to know what foods are healthy and what to do to ensure you eat the healthiest diet you can. A guide to healthy eating comprises five food groups that are recommended each day. They include;

  1. Grains (cereal foods )

  2. Vegetables and legumes.

  3. Fruits.

  4. Lean meats and poultry, fish, eggs.

  5. Milk and milk products.

Then why should everyone ensure they achieve good nutrition for their lives? The benefits of good nutrition go beyond weight. Good nutrition can help you achieve the following:

  • Reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, some cancers, and osteoporosis.
  • Reduce high blood pressure.
  • Lower high cholesterol.
  • Improve your well-being.
  • Improve your ability to fight off illness.
  • Improve your ability to recover from illness or injury.
  • Increase your energy level.

It is therefore important that you make considerations on your food choices each day as they will have an impact on your general health.
