The 2019 Edition of the Magharibi Michezo Awards promises to be bigger and better as more stakeholders have joined the annual initiative now on its 7th year .
Started in 2013 by a team of passionate sports lovers from Western Kenya, The Magharibi Michezo Awards has grown to become one of Kenya’s annual signature event that recognizes, rewards, supports and more importantly develops sports excellence in the region.
Through The Magharibi Michezo Awards Legacy Program, the initiative targets to create better opportunities for upcoming Stars at the grassroots in the talent rich western parts of Kenya through conducting capacity building training of coaches, distributing sports equipment to deserving community teams as well as seeking partnerships to renovate and/or build new modern sports facilities.
So far, the MMA initiative through the legacy program has trained 120 community coaches from the region with an aim of improving their technical literacy in areas of sports management , injury/first aid management , nutrition and food science, sports marketing, anti-doping as well as basic coaching techniques.
During a fundraising dinner event held in one of the Nairobi
hotels, an initial team of fifty Friends of The Magharibi Michezo Awards gathered to chat the way forward and to plan for the 2019 edition that targets to raise 10 Million shillings towards grassroots
During the meeting , 2.1 Million shillings was raised with partners pledging to bring on board more stakeholders and professionals from the region as the team strategize to raise the targeted 10 Million.
The meeting brought together professionals drawn from different sectors and who hold passionate optimism of imparting transformation in the Magharibi Communities through sports.
Speaking during the function , Bungoma County First Lady H.E. Mrs. Caroline Wesonga Wangamati noted that, ” All around us we have
seen tremendous evidence of how sports has transformed the lives of our future generations. Sports is a key player in improving leadership skills of our young ones and we can also use sports to transform our community values. I am very excited to be part of this journey and I hope many more professionals from the region can join us as we walk together towards achieving a better tomorrow for our young stars.”
Also making his remarks, lawyer Edwin Sifuna noted that the dream of building more opportunities for sports men and women across western Kenya will be realized through such noble initiative.
“It is time we came together as a community to impart change.
I am proud to have been part of this journey since it started and I am glad we have made tremendous steps towards achieving our long lasting goal of leaving a legacy and creating future world conquerors. I believe that change begins with me and I remain encouraged especially by the fact that this is a project initiated and developed by very young passionate members of our community.” Sifuna said.
The Magharibi Michezo Awards Organizing team members led by patron Silas Cheren, Chairman Michael Kwambo and Programs Coordinator Dennis Machio noted that among the targeted legacy projects : Most of the funds raised by the stakeholders will be channeled towards conducting advanced coaching trainings, buy basic talent development equipment for identified community coaches (e.g. balls, cons, bibs, uniforms etc.) and will also support in the building of modern basketball and tennis hubs in one of the Magharibi Regions by 2020.
“We are extremely excited by the huge potential ahead of us .This noble partnerships and commitment from our stakeholders opens up amazing opportunities for growth and has now challenged us to dream bigger.” Noted Dennis Machio whose sentiments were echoed by Patron Silas Cheren.
Cheren ,himself a former volleyball player said, “This new energy will create room for a powerful transformative agenda and will further create improved environment where our future stars can hope and work harder on their dreams for a better future.”

chairman Michael Kwambo further added that the team is exploring avenues of introducing cash prices in all categories with community coach of the Year prize being tipped to be the most lucrative.

included former Kenyan international Doreen Nabwire (Women soccer) and former Kenya 7’s international and national 7’s rugby coach Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu.
