There was shock and disbelief across social media platforms in Bungoma County as a flamboyant politician and an independent journalist were yesterday arrested for allegedly  being part of a cartel of fraudsters believed to be conning none-suspecting citizens.

In a tweet posted yesterday 23rd February, 2019 at exactly 21.34PM (EAT) by the DCI_Kenya’s official twitter handle, the seven, four of them understood to be from Bungoma County, were arrested after what the Director of Criminal Investigation’s Special Crime Prevention Unit termed ‘intense operation’.

“7 #fraudsters who have been imitating a very senior govt officer & socialites to obtain money by false pretences were arrested today after an intense operation. The 7 are:Joseph Waswa, Duncan Muchai, Isaac Wanyonyi, William Simiyu, David Luganya, Gilbert Kirunja & Antony Wafula.” Read the tweet from the DCI.

The police also added that the suspects were mostly targeting the members of the Asian community and will be charged on Monday.

Mr Joseph Waswa, who is understood to be seeking the Bungoma Senatorial seat in 2022 has severally hit the headlines with the first time in 2014 when he was arrested for allegedly shooting a Mombasa University student at a Bar in Kimilili town, 34KMs North of Bungoma town.

The late Mitch Kibiti, son of former Bungoma County Chief Officer in the Ministry of Public Works David Kibiti, was fatally shot dead at Club Antonio after a suspected short verbal exchange with the said ‘philanthropist’.

Mr Waswa, also known as ‘Chairman Lendrix’ and in his mid 30s, was later released on bond but caused a storm a year later when he appeared at the Bungoma High Courts with ten ‘body guards in heavy vehicles’ for the hearing of his case, prompting the Flying Squad to swing into action and order all the members of the convoy to lie flat on the ground. None was found with a gun though.

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa recently mocked Mr Kibiti for allegedly ‘accepting some cash’ to withdraw the case seeking justice for his own son’ during a Live interview with a local vernacular radio station, the claims Mr Kibiti has harshly dismissed and threatened legal action against the fast-rising legislator.
