It was a beehive of activities at the Matungu Constituency as more than seven candidates were cleared to run in the upcoming by election.
Immediate former NG-CDF Chairman Athman Wangara was among the candidates cleared by the IEBC to vie in the mouth-watering mini-poll.
Wangara, who has been tipped by residents as favourite despite running as an Independent candidate, was cleared after meeting all the requirements by the electoral body.
Speaking to the media after receiving the certificate at the Matungu CDF grounds, the former news editor promised to deliver the remaining work left by the departed MP Justus Murunga who passed on in November last year.
“I am delighted to be issued with this certificate and assure the residents of Matungu that we are going to work for everyone the Constituency regardless of their political affiliation, gender or region,” said Wangara.
Wangar, who had been accompanied by his wife Elizabeth Wangaraand the campaign team, also dismissed rumours by Dr. Bonny Khalwale that he had stepped down to back DP William Ruto’s man Alex Lanya who is struggling to find feet in the campaign.
“People said that I have resigned but as you can all see, here is the certificate from the IEBC, enough proof that I am in the race.”
The news of his nomination spread like fire amongst his supporters and his convoy traversed nearly all the five wards in Matungu as Wangara waved and talked to his supporters who were waiting at evrey joint to have a glimpse at him.
Other aspirants who were cleared include Charles Kasamani, (Independent), former mayor Anzelimo Kongoti (Independent), Peter Nabulindo (ANC), Alex Lanya (UDA), the late Murunga’s wife Christabel Murunga and Eugene Murunga.
Close to ten other candidates are expected to present their papers tomorrow.
The post fell vacant after Murunga’s death and has so far attracted 22 aspirants.
The Matungu by election is slated for March 4, 2021 on the same day as the Kabuchai one.
